It Took a Car Accident to Get Me Talking
By Kelly JohnsonSince I started my internship, I often times felt hesitant to tell people where I work. It sometimes brings up a difference in opinion and some harsh judgment. Therefore, I developed a mindset that I am in the minority in the argument and I might as well not talk about my work.I found this belief to be false once when I landed myself in a car accident in the middle of central Illinois.Due to having minor injuries I was required to go to the hospital to take care of them. I was calm despite being in my first major accident. So, I decided I would start a conversation to keep my mind off my injuries. I began to talk with one of the paramedics. She was asking me where I was going, and became quickly engaged in the conversation when I told her I was going home for the weekend. As I was explaining that I was interning away from home she asked me about it.With hesitation I started to explain the fact that I am interning for a pro-life organization. After I explained it, her face lit up with excitement. She then went into a motivational story about her own convictions about being pro-life.She explained about her pro-life upbringing and how she passed it down to her family. She even told me that her daughter got pregnant at a young age. Everyone was telling her to get an abortion, but she refused. The paramedic went on to tell me her daughter is now a proud mother! This stuck with me after the accident.Because of this conversation I came to realize that I am not in the minority and even if I was it's not a good reason to shy away from talking about abortion. More people believe in the importance of life than I thought, and you can bump into those people in the most unexpected places!Have you ever been pleasantly surprised by bumping into pro-life people in unexpected places? I'd love to hear your stories in the comments below!
