SFLI First Ever Banquet
May 26th was the first ever Benefit Banquet for Students for Life of Illinois in Chicago. The evening started off with a reception that included live jazz music. People seemed to be really enjoying the reception because it was difficult to get everyone to sit down!Once seated, we had a lovely dinner provided by Blue Star. There were several people there who were new and needed a bit of an introduction to the history of Students for Life of Illinois and our mission to end abortion in Illinois through reaching college students. The dinner was followed by this introduction and three awards that were given to some of our most outstanding students. Each student was awarded for their outstanding character in one of three areas.
Courage, Commitment and Creativity
Joe and Ryan received the award for Courage for their unwaivering support of life and women in need on the sidewalks of Chicago outside of abortion clinics.Peter received the award for Commitment because of his self-sacrificial work this semester in volunteering for SFLI and working with the pro-life flashmobs.Brenda Kay received the award for Creativity for her work in creating our 'Cupcakes at the Capitol' lobby day that has helped with pro-life legislative efforts in Springfield. After the awards, we were treated to a testimony given by Jessica. Jessica has been a pro-life force in Chicago for the past 3 years as president of the IIT Students for Life group. She talked about how important pro-life groups are for fighting the Culture of Death on campuses. She also shared a moving story about helping a college friend through her unplanned pregnancy. We are so proud of these and all of our pro-life students who stand up for life!Next, David Bereit, National Director of 40 Days for Life spoke.Trying to summarize or rehash his talk here could never do it justice. We will just say that by the end of his talk everyone was ready to stand up for and defend life! After the program was over, most of the attendees stuck around to mingle and listen to the jazz into the night. It was a great evening! We raised $24,417 on the night of the banquet. Our goal is to raise $40,000 to help us reach more campuses in the Chicago area.If you were unable to come to the banquet, there is still time for you to help us!Please help us reach this goal!
